An increasing number of people are becoming interested in palaeolithic, primal, stone-age or cave-man diets and exercise regimes. It is proving to be one of the best ways to lose body fat and help people achieve the healthy and fit bodies they desire. It is all based on the idea that we need to eat according to what we evolved for. Humans evolved over millions of years as hunter gatherers, eating meat, fruit, vegetables, eggs, seafood and nuts. It's only relatively recently in evolutionary terms that we invented agriculture and started eating grains and later processed foods. Research is showing that it's not eating fat that makes people gain weight, it's actually eating too much sugar and too many carbohydrates which our body then converts to fat that is the real culprit.

Although we can't be 100% about what our ancestors ate we can piece together a rough idea through examining archaeological evidence, the environment and looking at hunter-gatherer societies that still exist in South-America and Africa. The reality is that since we do live in the modern world we have to adapt and do the best we can with the resources that we have available to us. We must always listen to our own bodies and see how we respond to different diets and nutrition.

Considering all these things you might be under the impression that it's challenging to follow a paleo style diet. But it's actually quite simple. A good rule of thumb when going to the supermarket is to shop around the edges of the building where all the fresh food is kept. If you can it's a good idea to visit farmers markets where you can get even fresher food.

Preparing this type of food is also much easier. Because a lot of the food is fresh you can eat it either raw or lightly steamed. Of course meat should always be cooked. There is no reason to measure portions since the the amount of protein in the diet fills you up and satisfies your appetite, unlike processed foods with their empty carbs and sugar which just make you hungrier and thirstier making it easy to eat too much.

If you wish to go on in developing your new healthier life-style and take up exercise such as cross-fit, interval training and other such activities you'll find that this way of eating naturally will naturally support it. You're body will switch over from burning carbohydrates and sugar to fat and you're body will reach a healthy equilibrium fairly shortly. You'll have more energy through the day in stead of peaks and troughs following every meal.

Some people wonder if it's more expensive to eat in a healthy manner but this is actually a myth. Buying fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and seafood is not more expensive than processed food and since you need to eat less to feel satisfied you aren't spending as much. Processes food is made to never leave you satisfied and always craving more which means when you add it up you are spending more money on it.

If you feel overwhelmed by all the conflicting information about food and nutrition I highly suggest you take a look at the Paleo Diet. It is the diet that humans naturally evolved to survive and thrive one. I've written a free introductory guide book about the Paleo Diet which you can get from my site.
