If you're a fan of Apple's wildly popular smart phone device the iPhone, then you may be very excited right now by the news that Apple has teamed up with the telecommunications company Verizon in order to effectively double the number of service providers who carry this wonderful device. This signals the end of AT&T's heretofore monopoly in the market for iPhone service, and ushers in a new era of competition which should greatly benefit the end user.

The news was announced at the Lincoln center in New York City as Verizon and Apple teamed up to give a press conference and make the deal known to an eager public. Speculation had been rampant that such a deal was in the works, and fans of the Apple iPhone are celebrating the confirmation of the rumors. Verizon COO Lowell McAdam met with Apple COO Tim Cook on stage to tell an eager crowd that Verizon plans to start selling the Verizon iPhone beginning on February 10, 2011.

Increased competition is expected to drive further aggressive improvements in sales and service, and a choice in options and prices is sure to only be beneficial to customers looking to purchase a new Verizon iPhone. Verizon has already stepped it up merely by issuing the iPhone for use on its CDMA network, which according to industry analysts could provide much greater stability and reliability of service. But in addition to the possibility of more responsive customer service and a fewer number of dropped calls, Verizon is also offering a completely new feature on its iPhones. Verizon customers will soon be able to connect their Verizon iPhones with up to 5 other Wi-Fi devices, in effect generating their own personal Wi-Fi "hot spot".

Current Verizon customers will be offered the opportunity to pre order a new iPhone from the company starting on February 3rd, a full 7 days before this deal is released to the public at large. Although there are no 4G capabilities built in just yet, many in the industry expect such service to become available by the summer of 2011, and iPhone enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting that next step in service for their favorite mobile device.

This plan deals a blow to AT&T, but it's far from being a crippling one. The telecommunications giant plans to respond aggressively, with advertising and a focus on customer service. AT&T has already taken the step of severely discounting the prices of some of its older generation iPhone models in order to continue to build its customer base up until the time of Verizon's entry into the iPhone market.

Verizon's new options will start at $199.99 for a 16 gigabyte model and a two year contract. The company will also offer a 32 gigabyte model for $299.99 with a two year contract. iPhone lovers are very eager to get their hands on these new phones and plans, and there's certain to be a rush to acquire them come February. The competition is only beginning, and what forms it will take can only be guessed at. But what's for certain is that it's bound to result in great benefits to Apple iPhone customers.
