Now that Verizon has announced that it will begin selling Apple's very popular mobile smart phone device, the iPhone, the competition between Verizon and AT&T is certain to heat up. AT&T's monopoly over the iPhone effectively being over on February 10, 2011, we are certain to see a truly momentous competition for the hearts and minds of customers of the iPhone market, which many are looking forward to with eager anticipation. The move is widely considered to be the next big step for the iPhone market.

Verizon plans an extremely strong entrance into the marketplace by introducing exciting new features, including the anticipated possibility of greatly improved service through the use of its CDMA network and the ability to connect with up to 5 other Wi-Fi devices. The most exciting possibility, however, may be that Verizon is reported to be planning to offer its iPhone customers an unlimited data plan. As reported on January 9th in the Wall Street Journal, Verizon may be planning to come into the market swinging, by aggressively pushing an unlimited data plan. This will contrast strongly with AT&T's data plans, which are heavily capped, though they may be slightly less expensive.

Verizon has already ventured into the prospects of offering unlimited data plans to customers. Starting in April of 2008 the company began offering such plans to its customers using selected smart phones. These kinds of plans have proven to be very popular with consumers, and surveys have demonstrated that smart phone users tend to choose the safety net that these kinds of plans offer when given a choice. Industry analysts agree that this may be a very popular and desirable option for many iPhone users.

This may be a risky strategy though, as some have suggested. If the demand for these kinds of plans overwhelm Verizon's CDMA network, the improved service that many anticipate may never materialize, leaving consumers feeling cheated out of the appealing choice they had anticipated. This scenario may be a little too unrealistically optimistic about projecting the number of customers Verizon can expect to attract, however. Neither Verizon nor Apple seem to be concerned about this possibility, and it seems certain that both companies will benefit greatly from this move.

Consumers should be aware, however, that data plans for access to the 3G and 4G mobile broadband services continue to be capped, and that while there is no specific cap set for the unlimited plan, Verizon may protest if a customer generates more than 5 gigabytes worth of bandwidth. This may still be considered a cap in effect, if not in name. However, 5 gigabytes is still more than twice the cap set by AT&T's most generous plan, and should still serve as an enticement for those looking for a little more flexibility in their options.

In February, the competition will go into high gear and we will be able to see exactly how it all plays out. New competition in the market is bound to be a boon for iPhone enthusiasts, and Apple is also bound to benefit from all the new attention. It's looking like this will be a positive development for just about everybody.
