The Motorola Backflip was recently released and offers an impressive array of functionality. Key features include a combination of touch screen navigation and QWERTY text entry, as well as internet access and a 5MP camera.

The front of the phone strikes a resemblance to the Apple iPhone, however on closer inspection, one can see the difference as a full QWERTY keyboard "flips" from behind the screen. The Motorola Backflip measures 108x53x15x3mm and weighs 133 grams. The 3.1 inch TFT capacitive touch screen uses pixels at 320x480 to display its 256,000 colours for quality display of on screen content. The screen can be viewed in both landscape and portrait thanks to the built in accelerometer sensor.

Vibration, MP3 ringtones and WAV ringtones alert users to incoming calls and messages. For hands free communication on the Backflip, a speakerphone is installed with stereo speakers for superb sound quality. A 3.5mm audio jack accommodates both earphones for music playback, and hands free headsets for hands free talking.

The phonebook can accommodate a practically unlimited number of entries, and includes the popular photo call feature. 512MB ROM and 256MB RAM provide storage for data such as music tracks. The micro SD slot comes with a pre-installed 2GB memory card; however this can be increased to 32 GB by installing a larger memory card.

Class 12 EDGE and Class 12 GPRS provide the Motorola Backflip with its primary means of network connectivity in areas with little or no 3G coverage. In areas covered by 3G, HSDPA is available at speeds of up to 7.2Mbps. A faster internet connection can be attained thanks to Wi-Fi connectivity. This takes advantage of the signal provided by wireless internet routers in domestic and commercial locations. To share files with friends at no cost, Bluetooth V2.1 is installed. A micro USB connection enables the phone to be connected to a computer so users can transfer files and back up contact info etc.

The Motorola Backflip features a digital camera boasting 5MP (2560x1920 pixel resolution) for good quality image capture. This features autofocus and LED flash so quality photos can still be taken with minimum effort, even in low lighting conditions. As an alternative to taking still images, the camera also has the ability to shoot video in CIF quality at a rate of 30 frames per second.

The operating system of choice is the renowned Android software, in this case version 1.5 (Cupcake). In conjunction with a 528MHz processor, this provides an impressive user interface and a fast and smooth user experience.

The media player supports most of the common music and video file formats, whereas a variety of games provides an alternative method of entertainment. Social networkers will love the inclusion of applications allowing direct access to websites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter.

The broad range of features, coupled with its unique design is sure to make the Motorola Backflip a popular handset.
