Due for release in April 2010, the HTC Desire offers an impressive spec list, appealing to the tech-savvy Smartphone user. With key features including internet access, 5MP camera and Android Operating system, this looks set to be another successful release from the manufacturer.
The slim line (11.9mm) profile promises to be a comfortable phone to hold and use, with its weight of 135g leaving no doubt about its build quality. The AMOLED capacitive touch screen measures a generous 3.7 inches, meaning the menus can be navigated with ease. An alternative method of navigation includes an optical trackball. Auto rotation of the on screen content is achieved thanks to an accelerometer sensor which senses when the phone is rotates, allowing viewing of the screen in both landscape and portrait.
MP3 files can be assigned as ringtones allowing customisation of the phone, which works in conjunction with vibration to alert of calls and messages. In order to communicate hands free, a speakerphone is installed and this features Dolby Mobile sound enhancement for excellent sound quality. Also, a 3.5mm audio jack accommodates the use of earphones for listening to music as well as hands free headsets.
Internally, 576MB RAM and 512MB RAM is featured for storage of files and data such as music and video files. In order to attain more storage space, the micro SD slot can be utilises by installing a memory card of up to 32GB.
Class 10 EDGE and class 10 GPRS offer the HTC Desire's primary means of network connectivity. HSDPA at 7.2Mbps connects the phone in areas with 3G coverage, whilst the built in Wi-Fi connectivity offers a means of gaining a faster internet connection. This is by utilising the signal provided by local wireless internet routers. Version 2.1 Bluetooth offers a means of sharing files with friends at no cost, provided they are in the same vicinity and have a compatible handset. To finish the list of connectivity features, a micro USB (v2.1) port means the phone can be connected to a computer in order to carry out such tasks as transferring media files or backing up contact information.
The HTC Desire features a built in digital camera with 5 mega pixels (2592x1944) for high quality photography. Autofocus and LED flash simplify the task. As an alternative option to still photographs, the camera can shoot video in D1 quality (720x480).
Most common formats of music and video files are supported by the media player, whilst a stereo FM radio player and a selection of games offer entertainment alternatives. Social networkers will love the inclusion of applications allowing direct access to Facebook, Flickr and Twitter. Google connectivity offers access to Google Search, Maps and Gmail, and photos and videos can be directly uploaded to YouTube and Picasa.
The user interface is fast and smooth thanks to the renowned Android Operating system, in this case v2.1 (Eclair) couple with a 1GHz processor. The handset will be available in Brown and Silver, offering sophisticated styling as well as impressive technology.
