Dry hair is not exclusive to any one gender, hair type or even geographical location. There is no season for dry hair, because the elements of nature can dry out your hair all year round.

Forty percent of the population has naturally occurring dry hair. Your genetic make up means your sebaceous glands aren't producing the natural oils, known as sebum, your hair needs to stay hydrated. For the other sixty percent of the population, dry hair results from damage, the wind and weather, pollutants and daily wear of styling products.

Dry hair is a problem that should not be ignored. Aside from fly away static ridden hair and frizz, dry hair is more likely to suffer from damaging and breaking.

If you notice your hair is showing split ends or you are losing more than a few strands of hair each day, you likely have brittle and damaged hair. You need to immediately rehydrate your hair and bring it back to a healthy condition to put a stop to the damage.

Moisture is essential for the health of your hair, so avoid using styling tools that require a lot of heat, such as blow dryers, when your locks are dehydrated. You should also switch your hair care products, such as shampoo to moisturizing shampoos. Many hair care products contain paraffin wax or mineral oil, which rob your hair of moisture. Take the time to read the labels so you know what your putting into your hair.

Essential oils are great for your tresses, not only sealing in nutrients and moisture, but they also protect your fragile hair from every day exposure to toxins and pollutants. A little olive oil is a rich hydrator, but you can also use coconut oil, emu oil or jojoba oil. Looking for these ingredients in your hair care products are an added way to boost the nutrients in your hair as part of your daily routine.

Washing your hair too frequently will strip it of the natural sebum your scalp produces. Try to keep the washes down to every other day if possible. Follow up with a good moisture rich conditioner or a leave in conditioner for best results. Let your hair air dry as often as possible.

There is likely not a single person who can escape dry hair at some point. One of the first signs of dry hair is static, so as soon as your hair starts to fly away on its own, take action to rehydrate and put a stop to damaged hair before it has a chance to start.
