Yesteryear Star Of Bollywood - Waheeda Rehman

Waheeda Rehman, a brilliant actress, is popular for the ideal rendition of her characters. In the film industry, she is one of the few very well known yesteryear actresses. She was born in a conservative Muslim family from the place called Chengalpattu in the state of Tamil Nadu.

She acted in movies when it was the golden period of Hindi cinema, she could also develop a niche for herself because of her stellar performaces. Even though she wanted to become a doctor, her poor health did not allow her to be one. Nevertheless, Waheeda Rehman was trained as a classical dancer in Bharatanatyam. She started acting in Tamil films -almost in four of them - for which her parents supported her. In her movie Rojulu Marayi, she did a folk dance, which became an instant hit.

While she was basking in the glory of her success in Hyderabad, she was chosen by Guru Dutt to play a role of a vamp in his movie CID. When this movie became commercially successful, Waheeda Rehman was roped in for the lead role in Pyaasa (1957). She started keeping distance from Guru Dutt after the release of Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), as there were rumors about them having a relation.

But, with the release of Chaudhvin Ka Chand in 1960, both came together again. Yet another movie that Waheeda and Dutt did together was Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. This film was not appreciated well in the Berlin Film Festival.

She performed in many hit films directed by other popular film makers after Guru Dutt's death. For the performance in Guide, she won the Filmfare Best Actress Award and got good reviews. Neel Kamal released in 1968 was also another big hit. For the scintillating performance in Reshma Aur Shera, she was conferred the National Award. But, a few of the films did not do well. She then married Kamaljit, her co-star in Shagun, and was blessed with two kids Sohail and Kashvi.

Waheeda Rehman started acting again after 12 years, when she moved back to Mumbai following the death of her husband. This time she played the elderly roles as mother or grandmother. Her films Om Jai Jagdish, Rang De Basanti, Water and Delhi 6 are received well by the audience.

In Waheeda Rehman film presentation, she spoke in a discussion about her commercially hit films. Even when some fans consider Khamoshi to be her best film, some others also believe that her remarkable performances in Teesri Kasam, Pyaasa and Guide will never be forgotten.
