Writing Life of J.K. Rowling

The writing life of J.K. Rowling began in 1995 when Rowling finished her first manuscript for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone on an old manual typewriter. The book was then passed on to12 publishing houses and got rejected by all 12 of them.

However, after much efforts, Rowling got her first contract with Bloomsbury, a small London based publishing house. The first book came out in 1997 and was an immense hit with the masses with the copies today valued between £16,000 and £25,000.

This set the beginning of a never ending Harry Potter saga for Rowling and her writing career shot her from rags to riches, with the big screen adaption of all of her Potter books.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was the start of Rowling’s career and it was first released on the 30th of June, 1997 in the United Kingdom. It was the birth of Harry as we know him today.

It introduced Harry and his world of wizardry, magic and awe-inspiring events to the world. Harry’s past and present are illustrated before he goes on to enroll in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Originally thought of as a children’s book, Harry Potter’s world began attracting older readers as well and diversified its target audience.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
One of the most memorable Potter books was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Harry is shown growing up into his fourth year and his teenage angst and romantic inclinations were also hinted at.

This book was released on the 8th of July, 2000. People had started to queue outside bookstores before its release which showed the intensity of its fan following. Harry was shown competing in a tournament against wizards and witches from other schools in a tournament.

One of the characters died in this installment which marked the initiation of the darker parts of the story. It also marked the reincarnation of Lord Voldemort which signaled the start of Harry’s battle against the dark forces.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
The sixth installment in the series, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was released on the 16th of July, 2005. The book was anxiously awaited and it showed the first few losses in the war against Lord Voldemort.

Professor Dumbledore was also shown in a lot more detail and this book was no stranger to tragedy either. Although the Harry Potter series is rank with plot twists, the Half Blood Prince was one of the most prominent ones.

Supplementary Books by J.K. Rowling
Because of the intricate details, the life-like characters and the mind-blowing nature of the creativity that Harry Potter’s world exhibits, several books had to be released to shed further light on several areas of the magical creation. These books were:

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: A creature guide to the Potter world.
Quidditch Through the Ages: An illustration of the wizard sport of Quidditch.
The Tales of Beedle the Bard: A children’s book referenced to the Deathly Hallows.
