3D animation is more well-known than ever before. Movies produces nowadays are bigger, faster and much better than in the past and studios are responsible for this. Naturally, studios are not working in the same way, as they use processes they consider will best work for them. Pixar and Dreamworks are just two of the most popular and famous studios, both offering outstanding quality besides their huge experience. Both of them explore several sectors of the animation and animation industry, and they are market leaders as well.

Pixar

Pixar Animation Studios is one of the best known studios in the world and some of the biggest hit movies have been made here. The company was originally created in Emeryville, California, United States, being a CGI animation company.

Pixar is a newer company that most people would consider, as it was initially developed in 1979, as a sub-sector of Lucasfilm. It was bought in 1986 by Steve Jobs and was later purchased in 2006 by The Walt Disney Company, which was accompanied by massive investment and development.

Although they have a comic image, the company is a very serious one. They have already made 10 movies which are considered huge hits and will stay in the memory of the audience for many years to come. In 1995, they released the first feature film, Toy Story. Due to the success of the film, three other Toy Story films were released ever since. Other films produced by Pixar include Monsters, Inc., A Bug’s Life, Finding Nemo, the Incredibles and WALL-E.

They remain successful and are multiple award-winners in various categories such as twenty-two Oscars, four Golden Globes and three Grammys.

Naturally, the above mentioned awards are just the most important awards with great implications. As an animation company, they have earned numerous other awards and excellent reviews from industry critics.

Just like any other company, Pixar has to offer a so called unique selling point, or better say an area of specialty. For the company, this represents their CGI animated feature films. Pixar is using PhotoRealistic RenderMan within their process allowing them to create top quality images.

DreamWorks

Similarly to Pixar, DreamWorks is among the most popular and respectable 3D animation studios that are making films. DreamWorks, LLC is also known an DreamWorks Studios, DreamWorks Pictures or DreamWorks SKG.

It seems that DreamWorks’ portfolio of works spans a bit further than that of Pixar’s. The company offers a wide range of movies, but also television programming and video games, while Pixar is now just concentrate their efforts to make feature films.

DreamWorks started as a concept in the early 90’s, but it was only in 1994 when it became a reality for the creators. The creators – Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg – had no idea they have came across a multi billion 3D animation company, while now over a decade later, the company is still going strong.

Although the company was created by a small number of individuals, all of them decided to go their separate ways. The company was made an offer from Viacom, which couldn’t be refused and the deal was eventually finalized in 2006. After just two years, DreamWorks announced that their partnership will come to an end, as they signed a $1.5 billion deal, resulting in working along with India’s Reliance ADA Group producing films.

As the DreamWorks animation division of the business grow so big that in 2004 it was turned into a public company that worked from two studios.

Regarding their success, it shows similar patterns to that of Pixar’s. DreamWorks also created 10 excellent films, which were all box office hits with revenues well exceeding $100 million. However, there is always a film which is exceptional or which turns the company into what it is today and for this company, it was Shrek 2, which is DreamWork’s most popular film to date.
