Wicked is one of the hottest plays in London. This musical is based on book by Gregory McGuire and has completely re-imagined all of the beloved characters of L. Frank Baum’s the Wizard of Oz. It is touted as “the untold story of the witches of Oz”. It begins with a friendship being formed between young girls who are students of sorcery. As the story unfolds, we learn that these girls are whom we know as Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West.

This lively musical takes the audience on a trip through the worlds of witchcraft and wizardry and reveals a whole new aspect never before known about the story of the Wizard of Oz and some characters we never knew about. Wicked has received over 35 awards from around the world including the 2010 Laurence Olivier Award for “Most Popular Show”. Whatsonstate.com voted it “Best West End Show” and BroadwayWorld.com deemed it “Best Long-Running West End Show”.

Wicked, London, made its premiere in September of 2006 in the Apollo Victoria Theatre. There are 8 performances a week Monday through Saturday. The show is 2 hours and 45 minutes long. Since opening at the Apollo it has played more the 1750 times.

The Apollo Victoria Theatre is located in London on 17 Wilton Road. It was opened in 1930, has two levels, and seats 2,305. It was originally designed in the art deco style that was so popular at that time to be the New Victoria “super-cinema”. The outside of the Apollo was build completely from concrete with vertical fluting. The austerity of the concrete was broken up with some polished marble, granite, and chrome. The inside of the original Apollo was a bit more elaborate than the outside including tall pilasters that connect with fountains at the ceiling of the theatre.

The Apollo remained a cinema until 1975 when it closed. It was remodelled on the inside and six years later it was reopened as the New Victoria Theatre. It was the home to Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Starlight Express for 18 years.

The Apollo Victoria Theatre is the perfect place to enjoy Wicked, this unusual story of friendship and adventures in Oz.
