The Sony Ericsson W995 range offers relatively simple slider phone styling, however the features within the handset are far from simple. Offering internet access, an 8.1 megapixel camera and media player, this is one of the manufactures' most feature packed slider phones. It has recently been made available in a Pink colour variant, adding further appeal to the range.
The handset measures 97x49x15mm and weighs just 113 grams so it is comfortable to hold and use on the move. The 2.6 inch TFT screen displays 256,000 colours in 240x320 pixels for great quality screen display. An inbuilt accelerometer sensor senses when the phone has been tilted and rotates the on screen image accordingly. This means it can be viewed in both landscape and portrait orientations.
Ringtones can be downloaded in polyphonic form, or MP3 and AAC files can be used for this purpose allowing users to customise their handsets. These features work alongside the standard vibration function. When carrying out tasks such as driving, hands free communication is made possible by way of a speakerphone system. A 3.5mm audio jack is included which accommodates both hands free headsets and earphones for media playback.
118 MB of internal memory provides storage for media files and other data, however the presence of a Memory Stick Micro (M2) 8GB card means that adequate storage is available and this can be upgraded further to 16GB.
MP3, AAC and MP4 media files are supported by the media player. Entertainment alternatives include several games, some of which are motion based thanks to the aforementioned accelerometer, and a stereo FM radio player. Media files can be transferred to and from a computer thanks to the included USB (v2.0) port.
To stay connected in all but the most isolated areas, class 10 versions of both EDGE and GPRS cater to this purpose. HSDPA is available at 7.2Mbps and HSUPA at 2Mbps in areas with 3G network coverage. To gain a faster internet connection, Wi-Fi connectivity takes advantage of the signal provided by local wireless internet routers. Bluetooth v2.0 is also installed as a means of file sharing between phones in the same area.
An impressive 8.1 mega pixel camera (3264x2448) offers a means of taking extremely high quality digital photos. With features such as autofocus, LED flash face detection and image stabiliser, this task is made simple. Video can also be shot by this camera, in WQVGA quality at 30 frames per second.
A long list of additional features make the Sony Ericsson W995 Pink one of the most versatile slider phones around. It is sure to appeal to those who may not like touch screens or Qwerty keyboards, yet still want all the features of a modern mobile phone.
