The recent effects of climate change

In case you didn't notice, January to March 2010 has been recorded as the earth's fourth hottest period ever, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The scorching heat caused by global warming is just one of the phenomena created by the infamous climate change. But while world leaders continue to debate on how to handle this issue, recent occurrences and reports this year are already alarming the world.

In Ornissa, India, there are already more than 50 cases of heatstroke related deaths as of April 2010. India is one of the countries greatly affected by the season's heat wave, including some regions in South Asia, Northern Africa and Canada.

Aside from heatstroke, allergies are claimed to get worse due to climate change. According to a recent report by Time Magazine, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) found out that global warming could increase pollens particularly in the eastern parts of the US. Pollen is a well-known allergen that can trigger asthma and other reactions.

"The latest climate science makes it clear that allergies could get much worse," says NWF's Amanda Staudt in the report. "I really think this should be a wake-up call."

Disasters' link to climate change

Who could forget the recent disaster in Iceland? The Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted twice this year, which has disrupted air travel all over Europe. Recent studies reveal that climate change may have something to do with the series of volcanic eruptions in Iceland.

"Global warming melts ice and this can influence magmatic systems," said Icelandic vulcanologist Freysteinn Sigmundsson, in a report by Reuters.

This is supported by a research from UK's Royal Society stating that the increasing heat could affect the earth's crust - causing not only volcanic eruptions but also landslides and even earthquakes.

Earthquakes of course have been devastating the world in the past few months, killing and leaving many people homeless in countries like Haiti, Chile and China.

Changing the world

Disasters and tragedies like these can be prevented by minimizing the effects of climate change. Various ways include tree planting, making use of renewable energy and recycling.
