The Motorola Backflip Is A Functional Handset

Due for release in the first quarter of 2010, the Motorola Backflip combines a large touch screen with a full qwerty keyboard which flips to reveal itself from the back of the handset. A wide range of features is sure to keep tech savvy users entertained. The appearance is initially not too dissimilar from the Apple iPhone. However when the keyboard is visible, you can see it is very different indeed.

The Backflip measures 108x53.15.3mm and weighs in at 133g. The size allows for easy access to the touch screen features allowing a user friendly experience. The 3.1" capacitive TFT touch screen is capable of displaying up to 256,000 colours at 320x480 pixels. Alerts used by the Backflip include vibration and ringing with the option to utilize mp3 and WAV ringtones. A speakerphone is built in to the device allowing hands free communication. A 3.5mm audio jack is also incorporated into the the handset allowing the use of hands free kits. This can also be used to listen to music via headphones with a compatible jack.


The Backflip includes 2GB of memory as standard, but can be upgraded to an impressive 32 GB by using the provided microSD slot. Internet access is provided in the form of a HSDPA connection at speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps, along with full WiFi connectivity to take advantage of hotspots located around the country. Bluetooth version 2.1 is installed as standard, allowing users to transfer data and files with other Bluetooth compatible devices.

The camera on the Backflip boasts 5MP, operating at a pixel resolution of 2592x1944 pixels. Other features of the camera include auto-focus, LED flash and Geo-Tagging allowing users to tag the location at which the photo was taken. Video can also be recorded in HVGA at 24 frames per second.

Audio and video files are certainly well catered for with the Backflip. The phone is capable of playing several audio file formats. These include mp3, eAAC+, WAV and WMV9. Video files including mp4, H.263, H.264 and WMV are supported. To enable users to transfer music, video and other files to and from a computer, a microSD slot is also found on the phone.


Fans of social networking will not be disappointed with the Backflip. Users can download applications allowing direct access to Facebook and Twitter, along with Photobucket and Picasa integration for easy uploading of photos taken on the aforementioned 5MP camera. A dedicated microphone used for noise cancellation is found on the unit which means enhanced voice clarity. Other included features are an organiser, document viewer, voice memo recorder and voice dialling, along with T9 predictive text input.

The Motorola Backflip seems like a very well rounded unit which is sure to appeal to a variety of users. Entertainment fans will appreciate the camera and media playback versatility, users of social networking will be able to stay connected on the move. The versatility of the Backflip sets a fair standard in the Smartphone market.
