The Fear Of Ordering Cheap Theatre Tickets

Welcome to the Cheap Seats. The “Cheap seats” used to be something of a dirty phrase in theatre land. Traditionally, the Cheap Seats were in the stalls (remember that many early theatres did not have an upper level) which were so named because they were quite literally stalls where patrons stood or leaned through the performance. Later, as theatres grew larger Cheap Seats would mean the upper balconies where patrons could not get a clear view of the action and were really quite far from the stage. The most expensive seats were always in the Dress Circle where the viewing angle and distance from the stage was ideal and in the case of early theatres there were actually benches and a place to promenade. Lately the term has come to mean any seat that does not have a good view of the stage, such as behind a pillar or right on the edge of a row. Ironically the private boxes in a theatre have always been for celebrities despite some boxes having a truly appalling view of the stage. This was largely down to the fact that the private boxes are not there for true appreciation of the theatre but instead they are for being seen to be appreciating theatre.
