Global warming is a hot-button issue and it has been for some time now. Though we cannot solve this overnight, there is something we all can do, as parents, that can have a major impact on our natural resources: buy organic clothes for your children. It is a seemingly insignificant act however it does have substantial beneficial effects on the environment and to your children's health.

Cotton takes up only 2.4 percent of the world's farmland however it uses 25 percent of the world's pesticides to cultivate the crop according to Organic Exchange. Conventionally grown cotton uses disproportionally large amounts of chemicals, the World Health Organization designates approximately half of the chemicals it uses as "hazardous." Not only that, according to the Environmental Justice Foundation, just one teaspoon of the number two pesticide used in cotton production, Aldicarb, has the potential to kill an adult.

These toxic chemicals indirectly harm the environment as well as your own health as it can seep into lakes, streams, rivers, oceans, and rainwater. These pesticides are also a huge factor in contributing to global warming as they are a major source of greenhouse gases.

The benefits of choosing organic clothing for your children are twofold. The first benefit is environmental. Using sustainable methods to cultivate cotton does not do irreversible harm to the eco-system. The methods used actually help replenish the soil to maintain its fertility. The pesticides that are used in conventionally grown cotton and the harmful effects they have on the environment are non-existent with organically grown cotton. If you are an environmentally conscious parent, organic cotton clothing is the best option for you and your children.

Another benefit is the health of your child. A child's skin, especially a baby's skin, is much thinner and much more sensitive to the harmful substances in the environment. The pesticides used in conventionally grown cotton can have negative effects on your child's health. Your child's body may not be able to effectively fight the toxins used to create the clothes he or she wears. This is not meant to frighten parents in anyway but rather something to think about the next time you shop for clothes for your children.

As responsible parents and just responsible citizens of our planet, we all should ensure our children grow up in a healthy, beautiful environment. This is why Fuzzy Green Monster was established. It is our goal to provide your children with eco-friendly apparel that is fashion-forward yet environmentally sound. There is not reason you should sacrifice style and comfort for sustainability and we at Fuzzy Green Monster strive to prove that every day with every piece.
