Skin fillers are used in various forms for over 25 years. Fat injection, which was taken from unwanted fat deposits in your body, is historically the oldest existing medium. Modern era began with the FDA approval of bovine collagen Zyderm or 1981. Zyderm was the most frequently used to fill up to 2003. Lack of collagen, though, is that it is derived from animals, which may cause allergic reactions. Collagen is also only last up to 3-4 months. Testing and development of other aggregates in Europe and Asia began in the 1990s. Since that time, aggregates were created from different materials, including cattle, pigs, humans, birds, and bio-engineered products.

Today, doctors and patients looking for non-animal, longer-lasting fillers that provide a natural addition to the correction of long-term risk of side effects. Many cosmetic surgeons now choose hyaluronic-based fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm and Captique. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is found in soft tissue. It gives volume and fullness to the skin. These types of seals have advantages over fat and collagen injections, because they are not derived from animals, so they are longer and have less chance of side effects.

Q-Med's Restylane arrival opened up a whole new era of strengthening the skin. A colorless gel is injected into the wrinkle or fold of skin with a small amount of very fine needle. It maintains its shape using the body's moisture. Restylane has been used to shape facial contours, smooth wrinkles or sculpt lips. What results is a healthy, more youthful and fuller appearance. Since 1996 more than one million individuals received Restylane injections worldwide. Juvederm, another hyaluronic acid-based complete was recently approved by the FDA. It lasts longer than Restylane because of its molecular structure.

Fillers can be divided into those who are temporarily or permanently. In general, temporary fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm last from six to nine months and is easily biodegradable is absorbed and eventually excreted from the body. Permanent fillers such as Radiesse Artecoll and duration may last from several months to years. Many factors ultimately determine how long the filler material remains such as age, wrinkles and how much product is injected.
