When most people want to lose weight then they want to do it with as little effort as possible, so they blindly trust anyone or any pill or contraption that says it will help them do that. That means there is a steady stream of people willing to try the newest pills or fad diets like the lemonade diet or grapefruit diet, in a desperate attempt to lose weight.

Unfortunately when most people look for a diet then the first thing they check for is how much it says they will lose in the first week or two, that is like looking for your perfect car based on just its colour! What is the point in finding a diet which promises you these huge figures for the first week when it could be totally useless and even dangerous to follow?

The first few weeks are when you are most motivated and if you don't get good results then some people lose interest, but dieting should really be about the long term results if you want to succeed. Your diet should really encourage gentle and consistent weight loss as well as at the same time teaching you how to make healthier food choices so that when you come off the diet you can continue eating properly and keep the weight off.

If your diet does not do that then you will just get some false hope at the start as you lose some weight (which will probably be muscle and water loss as well as some fat), then once you realise you don't know how to carry on or it changes and you don't lose anywhere near as much weight from then on, then you get discouraged and quit. Really sit down and think about what a diet is asking you to do before you start anything, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is, losing 10lbs of fat in a week is just not possible, it will be the amount of weight you lose, not fat, which means you lose water and muscle in that figure too. Check to make sure the food you eat is balanced too as some diets like the cabbage soup diet rely on one food too heavily and may make you miss out on important nutrients.

When you have chosen a diet you are happy with then make sure you set small goals to help motivate you along the way, most people have one big goal instead which is not very motivating until you get close to achieving it. You can set up goals for every 10% of your overall target or just go for every half a stone etc. That helps to keep you motivated so you stick to it through the rough spots (which there will be) where you really want to quit.
