Seborrheic Keratosis are unattractive lesions which can be similar in appearance to warts. These lesions are benign and are noncancerous. They may look frightening and cause concern about skin cancer but there is no reason to be concerned. They can be removed by a physician after he examines them to ensure that they are simply Seborrheic Keratosis.

These lesions can vary in size from barely noticeable in color or size to large black raised areas of the skin. Seborrheic Keratosis are not the same as warts and they do have noticeable characteristics which set them apart from warts and other similar skin growths.

Some of the characteristics of Seborrheic Keratosis are that they do not contain the human virus papilloma which is found in warts. These growths can have a very rough skin surface as well is deep pits and fissures that create a cauliflower look or they can have a smooth look without any rough surface at all. Seborrheic Keratosis which are shaped like a cone can best be observed under a magnifying glass. Itching is usually associated with these growths and some people may be tempted to manipulate or pick at the growth which may cause it to become red and bleed.


The best way to deal with Seborrheic Keratosis is to avoid picking at them or constantly manipulating them. If they interfere with clothing or jewelry, if they itch or if they are in an unsightly and unattractive position they can be removed by a physician. There are several ways which they can be removed. One way is with liquid nitrate which freezes the growth or lesion. The lesion will simply fall off after several days and the skin underneath will have already begun to repair itself. Any scar will be flat and easily concealed.

Seborrheic Keratosis can sometimes look very similar to melanoma and can be very scary for the patient. Any skin rash or bump that concerns you including Seborrheic Keratosis should be observed and tested by a physician. A physician will best be able to assist you in determining how to handle any type of malignant or benign growth. Cosmetic procedures are available for removing these types of unattractive lesions and growths from the face, neck, scalp and other areas of the body.
