Okay, my fellow parents, I don't know about you but this one gives me some serious creeps. I am here to preach to you about protecting your children with something called a reverse phone lookup.

You must have heard about the teacher named Dustin King from Kelso, WA, on trial for engaging in "sexting" with an underage student? I have a daughter like that girl, 16 and naive. I wonder what she'd do if a 27-year-old teacher expressed interest and sent her hundreds of sexually explicit texts and images per day. I wonder how he managed to do any teaching. Yet, school officials claim King was an excellent teacher with a clean background, or at least a clean background check. So, this is the first time he'd gotten caught at this kind of dangerous play.

This teacher could have been teaching your children and mine, and I'll bet we would have wanted to know about something like that from the get-go. In this case, if another student hadn't alerted the school to what was going on, who knows how long it would have gone on and how it would have ended. This girl's parents should have been aware, but they weren't. We trust the school and the teachers, but sometimes they betray our trust. Most teachers are good people who hold our children's well-being close to heart, but there is bound to be an occasional bad seed who chose teaching for reasons other than teaching. What's a parent to do?

If your child's cell phone records indicate incoming or outgoing calls to, or from, numbers you don't recognize, you must investigate them.

Find out with whom your child is exchanging calls and texts - full name and correct age, past and present addresses, presence of criminal history, marriage/divorce history - and many other things. Of course, most of the time it will turn out to be another kid, but at a time like this, the mother of the 16-year-old victim would have realized her child was being corrupted by a sex offender.
