We often take portrait photographs even if we don't realise it, the photos that we take of our children, parents, teachers and friends are normally portrait photographs. But how can you make sure you're taking great quality portrait photos?

Good Portraits

For a portrait photo to be good it must make an impression on the person looking at the photo. The person may find themselves continuing to think about something in the photo because they find it so inspiring. A portrait is something that's very simple and elegant; it's personal and really makes an impression on us.

A good photographer will be able to draw out all of these features in portraits that they take, but how is that possible? Normally it's a natural skill however it's also possible to learn the skill and improve it.

It's important that the photographer knows what is happening and is in control of the entire situation. He must be in control and must be able to tell his subjects what he wants. This means that to take good portrait photos you must be able to strike up a conversation fairly easily with your subjects. By breaking the ice with your subjects you will find it much easier to get them to do what you want.

This isn't something that you have to do as you might find that different techniques will work for you. Some photographers find that staying professional works for them it's all very personal, and the techniques that work best for you will depend on your personality.

Natural Light

When taking photos never underestimate the importance of natural light, it's much better to use natural light rather than artificial light, so try to structure your portrait shots so that you have plenty of natural light.
