Ballroom Instruction has recently become very popular with the surge of television shows that highlight dance. No longer reserved for the retirement age, interest nationwide in learning to dance have grown with children, young adults, middle aged and yes - there is even a growth in the retirement ages. This is very exciting as dance is not just for those born with natural talent - it is for all! Dance is a natural way for us to express ourselves, and the growth of ballroom dance is just one more outlet that is gaining popularity. Serious competitions for ballroom dance have seen a rise as well, so whether your interest is purely recreational and for enjoyment or for more of a serious athletic outlet, there is sure to be something for you.

Ballroom dancing is known as a more formal form of dance. Ballroom instruction begins for young children but more and more adults are beginning as well. Some of the most common forms of Ballroom dance are Rumba, Foxtrot, Mambo, Cha Cha, Swing and of course probably the most know, the Waltz.


Ballroom dance has a high degree of influence from around the world. The Rumba and Cha Cha are both Cuban styled dance that have also risen is popularity. Some folks taking dance lessons just want to learn Latin dance.

The Waltz is one of the most widely known styles of ballroom dance and originated in Austria and Germany. It is a slower ballroom dance but that doesn't mean it is easy! Because of the slower beat, many more pieces can be added in that can make it very complicated and yet very beautiful. The Latin influences are most seen in the Cha Cha, Rumba, Mambo. Many folks request Tango dance lessons when they are learning ballroom dance. Another popular ballroom dance is the Jive. It can be a bit faster pace, requiring high energy but still are open to all to learn.

When you are thinking about what types of ballroom instruction to consider there are several things to think about. First, is your interest solely for recreation and enjoyment? Perhaps you have a big event or a wedding to prepare for and you want to learn some of the standard ballroom Dances? Or, you have fallen in love with the dances you have seen on television and you want to try what you have seen. Those that want to learn Latin Dance in particular is very popular as it can be very romantic. And of course, dance is great exercise! Those that practice their ballroom dance regular can be in shape and stay that way!
