Discover Why a School Disco Isn’t a Disco Without a Good DJ

Schools in the United States have been holding "proms" at the end of the academic year since the 1800s and references started appearing in year-books from the 1930s. This long established tradition is now gaining popularity in the UK but from party to prom the most important thing you need is a versatile DJ who really knows where it's at.

The "school disco" seems to be happening for all age groups nowadays and given how much can be spent on a proper prom night, schools can still arrange a good party without parents having to take out a second mortgage. It is very likely that you will hold your disco on school premises so the first thing to be aware of are any regulations about what equipment can be brought onsite, and anything that cannot. A good mobile disco company will have an array of lighting and effects to choose from and since that will give your disco an authentic atmosphere it's wise to take this into account, along with your budget of course. You may decide to charge a ticket price to put towards the cost of the DJ and possibly refreshments, and if you're fund-raising make sure you've looked into all the legal requirements first.

Your DJ will want to put together the best possible play-list for your age group, and should be very aware of track content in order to avoid bad language. A talented DJ will also mix tracks if you want your event to have a more grown-up "club" feel. If your disco is a school reunion then theme the event around the year you all left school and the DJ's play list will reflect the great hits of the era. All the more fun for you if you left school when New Romantics were the "in" thing!

I met up with professional DJ to discuss his top tips for discos and proms. He has been running discos for over a decade (and also runs an agency that specialise in disco hire and DJs for weddings, discos, birthdays etc) and has experience running parties for people of all ages. "It's really important to involve your DJ in the planning of the event," he says. "We have done so many different types of parties that we can really help with suggestions based on our experiences. Taking into account your budget, venue, guests and theme, a good DJ will be able to do so much more than mix a few tracks. We've even arranged snow machines and fireworks displays for parties and proms in the past but we can make it a night to remember with or without the frills."
