Indians will always remember 2009 as the year of awards and prizes. It is undoubtedly among the best years for every Indian citizens as the country has achieved success. After A R Rehman and Resul Pookutty success at the Oscars, the national football team's success at the Nehru Cup and Vijendra Singh's, meteoric rise as the World's no 1 in Boxing, comes a Nobel Prize for chemistry.

Venkataraman Ramakrishnan is the new name of success that every Indian is now chanting. Though he is an Indian American scientist, Indians are taking his success as their success. Mr Ramakrishnan has shared the Nobel Prize for chemistry with Thomas Steitz and Ada Yonath for their excellent work on ribosomes. They have been awarded for showing how the ribosome functions at the atomic level. It is expected that their inventions and research on the functioning of ribosome, that process proteins inside the human body will contribute largely in making new antibiotics that will increase the possibility of cure of diseases that are still considered incurable.

It is certainly a huge step forward for both chemistry and medical science but for Indians, Ramakrishnan's achievement means more. Ramakrishnan's success is likely to inspire students of chemistry and medical science largely, which is a great news for the country. The achievement of the Indian-origin scientist will surely boost up the morale and confidence among the youths that ‘yes, they too can'. Ramakrishnan's achievement has once again proved how fast India is progressing in the world and in the near future the country is likely to achieve more success in other sectors too.

There was never lack of talent in India but in past many talented Indians have failed to achieve success at the grand stages, but in the recent times, the trend has changed a little. Sushmita Sen was the first name that brought India to limelight and from then on many Indians have proved themselves in front of the world. Amartya Sen, Jhoompa Lahiri, A R Rehman and now Venkataraman Ramkrishnan. As an Indian, I sincerely wish the list gets bigger every year and our abilities are proved in sector.
