In an effort to help a poodle fulfill its maternal instincts, a dog psychologist ended up prescribing a box turtle. One book he called understanding your dog was written because this psychologist really takes his work seriously. From this doctor who is not only an associate professor of psychology at local university but an associate director for research at the local zoo as well is an explanation in his book of how animals are individuals too. There are times when people assume a lot of things but he is honest in expressing himself.

For one young couple with a dog, he said that the dog did not let the husband enter the bedroom on certain occasions. Whenever they fought, the dachshund owned by the couple would have a catatonic fit and this was mentioned in his book. A lot like humans' is the body language of dogs and as he said they often develop like young children. When it comes to tolerating closeness, dogs like humans have different abilities in dealing with this.

Dogs normally develop through several stages and this is what the doctor points out so it is advised that getting a puppy is best when it is between six and eight weeks old. In terms of getting a puppy older than 10 weeks, it is not wise unless it has been raised with a lot of people around. Seeing its way of interacting with other puppies is important when you are considering getting a dog. Being outgoing is not always a plus for the dog can be the most aggressive.

After investigating it, see if he will play a game of tug of war with an old scarf or a glove that you brought. What is not necessary is discipline training for a puppy at five or six weeks since he will forget it but what is important is that you show him tender loving care and expose him to a multitude of experiences that will enrich his environment.

When it comes to the sensitive fear period at eight weeks, this is where he mentions how owners should be careful not to cause any undue trauma for their puppies may it be a visit to the vet. Before a dog will be emotionally bonded to his owner it takes 12 weeks and at this time his spirit or attachment will not be broken with discipline training. Different people in various situations are given recommendations for dog breeds by this doctor who has a veterinary degree and a doctorate in psychology from a London university.

For instance, for a family with children in a house, he recommends a golden retriever, for a young couple, any of the terriers, for an apartment couple, a schnauzer, a Yorkshire terrier or a poodle, for an older couple, a Yorkshire terrier, pekingese or pug. Compared with the past, he says that it is no longer possible to tell the temperament of a dog simply based on the breed. That's because there is less quality in breeding which is rather tragic.

He calls dog breeders who get together and decide to change the standards of a breed a bunch of cranks. If a person is not aware of the possible results then he should not try and change standards, he said. When it comes to being named the best in the breed, there is emphasis now on how prize dogs should be subjected to tests. This should be considered to ensure that you do not have a zombie for a winner.
