Jay Reviews Dead Set

I stumbled across this little gem recently and thought I would add my two cents. Dead set is 28 Days Later Meets Dawn of the Dead meets Big Brother. Now keep in mind that this is a British Zombie miniseries and some of the terms you may want to look up. Those English people do talk funny at times.

I found the characters multi dimensional. You could really see their transformation from soft self absorbed brats into people who must confront the world going to hell around them. This is a large cast and a huge production. The zombie rules are pretty standard. If you get bit then you will turn and since it is a British undead movie. The dead can run like hell.

We follow the intern Kelly who goes from awkward cheating on her man intern to tough survivalist. The action is very fast paced with a higher mortality rate than many of the war movies that I have come across. There is ample amount of gore and I liked how they gave the zombies crazy looking eyes. You even get to see one of the main characters get torn in half.

I found refreshing the idea that events were thrown at are group of survivors and they still were able to pull it together….for the most part.

I wished that the camera work had been a little less all over the place for the action sequences. I also with that the series had lasted more than 5 episodes. There were a lot of directions that could have been explored. I mean the whole concept of gun control in a country over run with the living dead could have provided great political satire. The pace of the show was fast from the very beginning and never slowed down.

I would have liked to see more of the asshole producer’s personal development and more television news footage would have been good too. But in all honesty when I tried to make a zombie movie it turned out really embarrassingly bad. So I will leave it to this with better talent and bigger budgets and remind myself that if this were to ever truly happen that it only takes one selfish prick to ruin it for everyone.
