Acne can be a major problem for many people. Some only get it during puberty, and never have a problem again once they are adults. Others, unfortunately, continue to be plagued by acne long into their adult years. If you are one of these people, you have no doubt tried many different remedies with little success.

The common acne treatments include preventative or general skin care products, specialized acne treatments, and prescription remedies. These all have a chance at being effective, but it all depends on how your skin reacts to them. In some cases, they will work at first but lose their effectiveness over time.

General skin care products work because they are things you should be using anyway. Regularly washing your face can help prevent clogged pores that can lead to acne. Of course, if you are a regular sufferer, you probably already know this. What you may not know is that there is not much value in buying a product marketed as a cleanser for acne than there is using warm water and a mild soap. Both will accomplish the same thing.

Specialized products include things like astringents, which are intended to make your skin less oily. They can have the side-effect of drying out your skin. Other choices include benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, which are used to fight off bacteria that can cause acne.

Prescription-based acne treatments can be in the form of antibiotics, which can also kill bacteria. Other options include hormones, since hormonal imbalances can be a cause for acne. Also there are more drastic measures such as chemical burns and peels, which can clear up your skin very rapidly, but tends not to last very long.

All of these options are treating the symptoms, not the cause of the acne. In many cases, the actual underlying cause can be as simple as diet. For me personally, I find that if I eat fried snacks like tortilla chips, I have a very bad breakout. This is just a small example. You should look to the site below for more comprehensive diet information.
