If you're a women over 40 years of age and trying to get pregnant and have been told you are infertile, there are options you available to you to reverse your infertility.

A common issue facing infertile women is problems with ovulation. If this is the case, your doctor may recommend a drug called "clomiphene." The brand names this drug goes by are "Clomid," "Milophene," and "Serophene." You take clomiphene as a pill and it is supposed to stimulate your ovaries to release eggs. The idea is, the more eggs you release, the higher the chance of you being pregnant.

The drawback to clomiphene is that it has more side effects than another popular infertility drug called "gonadotropins" but it is less expensive than gonadotropin. Also, clomiphene carries a lower risk for "ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome" which can lead to pregnancies with more than one baby.

Ovulation complications can also result from polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS. This condition is a major cause of infertility and it is basically a hormone imbalance which interveres with normal ovulation. If you are diagnosed with PCOS, your doctor may prescribe "metformin" (brand names are "Glucophage" and "Glucophage XR") in addition to taking clomiphene.

Realize that clomiphene is not 100% successful. If you do not conceive after this treatment, the typical next step are hormone shots. Again, you and your partner will have to weigh the benefits and the negatives with any treatment option. If you do decide to progress to taking hormone shots, it is usually done on a daily basis at the beginning of your menstrual cycle. Sickness in your stomach and bloating are common side effects and for some women who have multiple large ovarian cycsts, you may experience more serious side effects.

Clomiphene gives a woman a greater chance for multiple births than normal (twins or triplets) but hormone shots are even more likely to produce twins, triplets, or more babies. These are some of the potential factors that must be taken into consideration if you are considered infertile and want to get pregnant.

Getting pregnant is possible and many women have successfully brought a baby into this world. Keep an open mind and keep yourself as healthy as possible.
