To do this, you will need to get a physical exam. Questions may be asked about the couples' past sexual and health histories. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health, sometimes this can determine the source of the fertility issue but more often than not, more tests must be done to determine the cause of infertility.

Testing men is a little easier than it is for women. The doctor will want to take a look at the man's semen to see the shape, number, and movement of the sperm. It is not uncommon for doctors to suggest testing the man's hormone level at this point.

The Office on Women's Health state that doctors usually start testing a woman by checking to see if she is ovulating regularly and normally. There are a few ways to do this and fortunately, one of the ways she can do this is from the comfort and privacy of her home.

A woman can keep an eye on her ovulation by writing down changes in her morning body temperature for several months. She can also write down what her cervical mucus looks like for several months, or she can purchase a home ovulation test kit that is available at drug stores or grocery stores. The time frame for these tests is a relatively long one but it is necessary for doctors to have a good picture of what your body is doing for several months. Blood tests and an ultrasound of the ovaries can also be used to check ovulation.

If ovulation is determined to be normal by your doctor, other test are available to find the root cause of why you are having difficulties getting pregnant.
