How to Meditate Properly

Meditating is very simple to accomplish successfully, but you must know exactly what to do and when to do it.

When to practice is something that you have to choose. My advice is to practice meditation every single morning for at least ten minutes, but if you're too busy you might choose any other time. Avoid to meditate after a meal, as you won't feel completely relaxed. Remember to meditate at least three times per week or the long term effects won't be very noticeable.

The best place to meditate is anywhere without distractions. You don't really need a fancy room, but somewhere you enjoy to be is preferable. Try to make everything as comfortable as possible, especially your sitting area. There are yoga pads that sell in many stores. You can place one of them on the floor so you'll be more comfortable. Although it's believed that certain music can help you relax better, it won't help you clear your mind. Therefore, I don't recommend listening to music or having any other distraction whatsoever.

When you're ready, close your eyes. Put your mind in a blank state. If you can't do it, simply focus on your breathing. Inhale and exhale deeply from your abdomen, not from your chest. Vary your breathing: start by breathing normally and progress to breathing deeply. This should take one minute. After you are breathing as deeply as you can, start over again slowly. Continue this cycle for at least ten minutes. Remember, don't think about anything other than your breathing, and about nothing if possible.

Thinking about nothing or blanking your mind requires very constant practice. After a few months of following this meditation routine, you might be able to free your mind of any thoughts whenever you want. In fact, after a few weeks you'll probably be in a better mood and feel more relaxed. This routine can also help you sleep better.

This technique is especially useful if you're under a lot of stress. If you know anyone who is undergoing much stress, tell them about meditation and how a few minutes a day can change their lives.
