Stretch marks are a common side effect that occurs after weight loss or pregnancy. When the body expands from weight gain, the skin is stretched out accordingly. When the body is then reduced in size, the skin doesn't always shrink appropriately, leaving a trail of stretch marks behind.

Think of your skin like an elastic waist band in a pair of pants. Over time, the elastic wears out and doesn't pull tight anymore, leaving it saggy and loose fitting. Your skin functions relatively the same way. Over time, skin loses its elasticity, and while it will still expand, it doesn't always retract to perfect form.

Stretch marks do little for a person's sense of vanity. Often, they are deep and discoloured. While there is no cure for stretch marks, there are things you can do to prevent the onset of stretch marks.

Caring for your skin during a weight loss regime or pregnancy can often reduce the severity of stretch marks. Hydration is important for you skin, so be sure to drink plenty of water and fluids. A well balanced diet that provides proper nutrients to your skin can help maintain your skins natural elasticity.

Moisturizing the skin itself is often a great preventative measure. However, standard body lotions likely won't do the trick. Instead look for a body cream or body oil that has deeper and longer lasting penetration. Coconut oil is a great one due to its natural healing ingredients.

If you are beginning a weight loss plan, start using a moisturizing oil or cream to your belly and thighs from day one. It should be used morning and night, as well as before and after exercise. If you are pregnant, you should check with your doctor about which ingredients to avoid as some women are sensitive to many ingredients during pregnancy. However, once you've settled on a good cream or oil, start using it right away, and continue as your belly grows.

Fighting stretch marks is a daily battle, so remember to drink plenty of water, eat the right foods and find a great skin cream or oil to help you win the war.
