Keratosis pilaris is also known as follicular keratosis. It is a genetic conditions that shows itself as hard bumps on the skin, consequently more informally known as chicken skin. It is most common on the back and outer sides of arms, but can also be seen on the thighs, sides, and bottom. Less common, but possible, lesions can appear on the face.

Keratosis pilaris affects approximately 40 percent of adults and from 50 to 80 percent of adolescents. More commonly women are affected than men. There are several related conditions to keratosis pilaris, most of which are genetically inherited.

Symptoms of Keratosis Pilaris

Keratosis pilaris is a result of the overproduction of the keratin protein. The high level of keratin blocks up hair follicles in the pore. This causes the formation of hard plugs, a process known as hyperkeratinization. There is no danger or consequence to this skin affection apart from the aesthetically displeasing red, hard bumps that appear of the skin. People suffer from chicken skin year round, but the condition seems to worsen during cold dry months. Many hard bumps contain an entraps hair which is a result of the keratinized skin. These hairs can be taken out, but it may cause scars.

Keratosis Pilaris Treatment

There is no all encompassing cure for this skin condition, but there are some keratosis pilaris treatments that effectively lessen the symptoms. The effectiveness of these skin treatments is directly related to the individual's condition as well as their commitment and consistency in the use of the treatment. Vitamin A and related acids come in the form of skin repair lotions that have proved successful for some. Also the use of retinoid creams is popular treatment options. The downfall of these treatments is that stopping the treatment means the return of the symptoms.

Therefore, it may be worth trying natural skin treatments that address the root causes of keratosis pilaris and not just its symptoms. Initially it is vital to exfoliate and use deep moisturizing natural creams. Then it is time to search for a truly effective healthy skin cream that can restore your skin and prevent keratosis pilaris from developing again.
