Such is the path from that every artist must embark on before they can ever truly be considered artists. The earliest works of any artist when first starting to explore their creative talent can never be as strong or vivid as their truly professional works. But this trend is not applicable to just individuals but also to society as a whole.

The primate cave wall scrawling are the earliest pieces of art known to man and they have in many instances depicted pivotal scenes in our early history that predate the first written words. But more importantly they show us the origins of the fine art that we call art. From these humble and often inaccurate depictions humanity has at different paces has increased the complexity and intelligence behind these works of art.

While depiction of events was the primary goal and purpose of art, its usefulness has been greatly extended. Propaganda is one way in which art was extensively used with two great examples being that of the USSR and Nazi Germany. In both of these instances strong messages and themes were embodied. Another use is that of social commentary whereby strong messages could be communicated via a visual medium. It is interesting to note that the former use is mainly practiced by large institutions such as governments while the latter is practiced more by individuals.

While story telling may have been the initial purpose of art being created, other areas where it is used include as a medium for storing information, creating or recreating beauty, as well as being a means to express intense emotions.

Perhaps it may be fair to say that as mankind itself has become more sophisticated the ability to more accurately understand our environment has subsequently increased the quality of our artworks.
But despite this complexity art also has the unique property of being able to transcend language barriers in a fashion that is similar to numbers but with a far greater deal of accuracy in the message being conveyed. It is in these moments that all peoples regardless of their nationality or culture can come together as one.

With the growth of civilizations the places where art can be displayed have also greatly expanded, whether it be photography, on large billboards, art galleries or even online. For example internet surfers will easily be able to find an online art gallery catering to various different artistic niches. Many of these not only offer galleries for viewing but also paintings for sale.
