Do we eat just to satisfy our hunger? Not really. A big reason why we eat is for enjoyment, the pleasure of experiencing different flavors and aromas, and the satisfaction of feeling full after a delicious meal.

Also, there is the social side to eating. Even if sometimes you eat alone, eating is meant to be a joyful experience, not a mad dash through a drive-thru as it has been reduced to in this day and age.

The biggest thing stopping us from really enjoying our food is the speed at which we eat nowadays. We tend to shovel down our food, hardly stopping to breathe inbetween mouthfuls. This tendency to gobble down our meals is a good reason why food manufacturers provide such terrible fare today,

Your brain normally needs up to twenty minutes to receive messages from your stomach saying that you are full. If you slowed down your eating, taking time to savor each mouthful and chew thoroughly before swallowing, your brain will receive enough time to receive the message that you are full. If you just shovel down your food, then by the time your brain realises you are full, you will have overstuffed yourself and will be feeling uncomfortable.

To reduce the risk of indigestion and heartburn, and other effects of overeating, just slow down and chew more slowly. Another bonus to making your meals last longer is that you will massively cut down on the number of calories you take in to your body, without still feeling hungry, and this is a great help in managing your weight and maintaining a slim figure.

One issue with eating too fast is that it increases the chances of choking on your food. Choking incidents are to blame for almost two thousand deaths every single year. All the more reason to slow down and chew all your food completely.
