Delhi decides to cycle around

Salman Khan does it. George W Bush is a regular at it. No it is losing your anger at the drop of a hat or even starting a war just because you felt like it. These two and a whole lot of other celebrities are part of a cult that swears by cycling for health. With rising pollution levels and the snarling traffic jams cycling doesn't seem like too bad an idea. In a bid to finally make use of the dedicated cycle lane along the pavements in its infamous BRT corridor between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand Flyover, The Delhi Integrated Multi-modal Transit System (DIMTS) has set up a cycle station with cycles for hire.



Now for a nominal price of Rs 10 you can hire a bicycle and beat the chaos that the BRT has become. What's more in this day and age, Rs 10 will allow you to keep the cycle for the entire day. The cycle station at the intersection of the Greater Kailash and Siri Fort road will also act as a parking spot for your cycles in case you already possess one. It's interesting to note that cycles contribute 20 per cent to Delhi's traffic. The thought behind this endeavour is to increase the intensity of non-motorized modes of transport in Delhi.



Started in collaboration with the Delhi Cycling Club, an NGO that facilitates cycling tours around the city, the authorities are pretty serious about promoting cycling in Delhi. They organized rallies where people were given bikes to cycle in the corridor. Since its inception the BRT has come to be an albatross around the people's necks. While some swear by its efficiency, bus commuters who get from end-to-end in 15 minutes flat, others can't curse it enough. Imagine cycling away at a speed higher than a swanky BMW trying to wade its way in a lane opposite you.



Or the fact that you could be exploring the area around BRT like Greater Kailash, Lajpat Nagar or even taking a healthy ride in and around Siri Fort would be a welcome thing to do as the winter sets in. With the eye focused on next year's Commonwealth Games, the Delhi government plans to de-motarise areas around the venues for the games. So get ready to a lot of cycles around the dedicated cycle lanes around Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Central Delhi and the University areas.



The Delhi Metro will also be setting up more cycle stations around the stations in addition to the already existing ones around the North Campus, Patel Chowk, Mandi House, Barakhamba Road and IP Extension.
