Claro: The biggest Mobile Phone Network In The Americas

Claro is the largest mobile phone network in the Americas. It is part of the Mexican telecom group Am?rica M?vil which is one of the four largest mobile phone network operators in the world, with more than 200 million customers. It serves clients inArgentina, Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico and Uruguay. Am?rica M?vil's operations in Colombia and Ecuador are expected to be rebranded as Claro in the future as well. Claro may mean bright, clear or of course, in both Portuguese and Spanish.
Claro was launched in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay on March 25, 2008 as a rebranding of CTI M?vil. As of March 31, 2007 it had more than 12.795 million subscribers under the former brand, with services on CDMA/1XRTT and GSM/GPRS/EDGE wireless technologies. As of March 2008, it has more subscribers than the other companies.

CTI M?vil had purchased Hutchison Telecommunications Paraguay S.A. (who operated as Port Hable) in July 2005, to begin serving customers in that country. It competes with international operators like Tigo (Millicom), Personal (Telecom Argentina / Telecom Italia), and VOX (KDDI).

It is providing 3G UMTS/HSDPA network to the largest cities in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. They claim to have the best 3G coverage in the region.
Actually Claro Company holds the second place in the Brazilian market with 46 million clients and serving 3,497 cities with a market share of 25, 47%. The company offers services with GSM with technology GPRS/EDGE. Since 2007 Claro also has initiated their 3G service that has around a total of 16 million users (September/2010) in the entire market. It is not clear the percentage of the Claro in the 3G segment.
The company has increased their advertisements hoping to bring more customers from other competitors with free cell phones and better rates for distance calls and calls between their clients. Claro also has been more aggressive with promotions regarding Iphones and Blackberrys data plans which clearly is an attempt to "steal" customers from the biggest mobile operator, VIVO, and at the same time other competitors, as TIM and OI, have followed Claro what makes the Brazilian market one the most competitive in the world.

Also, the initiative to bring the Ipads for Brazil gives Claro an advantage in the holiday season since it seems to be an exclusive agreement between Claro and Apple.

The bad side is that most clients are using pre-paid services which the company says bring slim profit margins and gets worse since the competitors are fighting for the same market in the hope to these new customers to upgrade later on.
