Children are ideal subjects for photographs, for many reasons. First, such pictures tell the story of their lives. From the moment they are born there is a visual record of their development which will not only be a pleasure to their parents and grandparents but will also be fun for them to rook back on, and to show their own children in years to come. Even with the arrival of home video cameras, it is hard to beat a still picture that captures a fleeting moment in a child's life. And last but not least, an unlimited number of copies can easily be made and sent to friends or relatives anywhere in the world.

There is no need to photograph every breath children take, but at least try to make a record of important events such as birthday parties. These in themselves will make a fascinating series of pictures that show the child growing and changing. It will also provide the children with pictures of their friends.

Often the best way to photograph children is to take a candid approach, especially when they are absorbed in some activity. A medium telephoto or zoom lens - 80 to 200mm - will be useful in such cases, making it possible to keep at a certain distance but still fill the frame. A film with a speed of about 200 ISO should allow work in moderate lighting conditions without a tripod or flash, either of which could distract the child and destroy the spontaneity.

Special occasions such as birthday parties provide excellent opportunities for the photographer. For example a 400 ISO film should allow an exposure just short enough for the camera to be hand-held.
