Like all other states in the country, state elections in California is a major political issue. Though the number of elections in California varies by year, the state goes for a gubernational election once in every four years. The state elections in California, which is also known as the general elections, are generally held in the month of November. However, the electoral law of California has a provision for a special election at any time in the year if the need arises.
State elections in California take place on a county-to-county basis and cover various issues, including economic development and of course budget allocation. The general or state election in California is an election for judicial, Constitutional, legislative and Presidential offices. Just like all other states, the secretary of the state, announces the results of the elections on a particular date as received from all the 58 counties of California. After the collection is over, the secretary of the state compiles the ballot results of all the counties and thus the ultimate mandate is announced. The electoral law of USA says that the statement of vote has to be completed within 39 days from the day the last polling takes place and the supplement of vote is completed within 159 days from the same.

At present, there are six political parties that taste their fate in the general elections of California. Apart from the Republican Party and the Democratic Party, other four parties that field candidates in the California state elections are American Independent Party, Green Party or Green Party of California, Libertarian Party or Libertarian Party of California and the Peace and Freedom Party.
