Breast implant failure is a reality at some point for nearly all women that get breast augmentation. Even though breast augmentation is one of the most successful of all cosmetic procedures, the reality is that at some point breast implants can and will fail. The indications of faillure are significantly different between saline and silicone and you should know the difference before you make your final decision.

Eventually all implants may fatigue and develop a hole in the outer shell. It naturally happens over time as a result of the motion within the implant wall. A tear may develop in the outer shell due to the pressure of the implant contents due to your natural motion. Many advancements have occurred in the manufacturing of implants increasing the durability, but they are still not indestructible.

Over the past 14 years the most common implant has been filled with saline. Until November of 2006 saline was the only FDA approved implant, while the silicone implant was used primarily in clinical trials. Most of the implants subject to fatigue and failure today are saline as a result.

Saline implants are subject to deflation because the fluid can easily flow through a hole in the outer shell. In the case of saline, if a rupture occurs the deflation happens quite quickly. The actual period of time it takes to deflate varies but it can happen in as little as a day, or as long as a week or more.

Women usually notice it when they see or feel that their breast is not as full as it once was. The breast implant failure is rather obvious. No one wants a rupture to occur, of course, but some women prefer saline because of this very point. Since the deflation occurs quickly they will know about the problem right away and can seek medical attention. Since the failure occurs very quickly with saline, the woman knows she needs to visit with her plastic surgeon quickly.

Silicone gel implants are a comprised of a cohesive gel and unlike saline are not subject to rapid deflation. What type fails more often, saline or silicone? All breast implants have to be replaced after some period of time. Even with a large hole, while the silicone may bulge out of the tear, it will eventually fall back in due to its thick, viscous consistency. Therefore silicone breast implant failure is less noticeable and might only be detected during a mammography.

Both types of implants are subject to failure. Since saline implants are subject to rapid deflation, it increases the possibility that the patient will need to replace the implant at some point in her lifetime. In most cases, even upon failure, silicone breast implants will cause no noticeable change in appearance or feel.

Upon evidence of implant failure you will need to visit again with your plastic surgeon. While breast implant failure simply is not as common as it once was, you need to consider these issues upon choosing the type of implant you desire. When you meet with you plastic surgeon be sure to discuss the benefits and risks of saline and silicone breast implant ruptures.

Breast implant failure is a real probability in all breast implants. Are saline or silicone breast implants different? Each type fails in a different way. It is important to know and understand how and when they fail. If you give your breast implants the proper care and attention they deserve they should last a long time.
