It is said that laughter is the best medicine. If that is true, then Indian television seems to be playing the role of doctors for its audiences. Yes, we are talking about comedy shows that appear on every other entertainment channel on Indian television today. A host of actors, or stand up comedians (as they are called) make a living out of making people laugh. Divine thought, isn’t it?

Well, Indian television has recently seen a surge in comedy programs. These programs in India have taken place of prime time entertainment nowadays. Some of the popular these shows are even allotted prime time slots on various channels looking to their popularity. The reason being the entertainment value they seem to carry along with themselves. Moreover, these are shows which are not gender specific and enjoy a wider audience than others. The best comedian always keeps the show alive for long run. Basically, TV programs in India today have become family entertainers. Stand-up programs seem to have carved out a niche for themselves in the Indian television industry.

Indian television or rather Indian entertainment industry is in its transformation phase. Newer ideas are showcased by people and more importantly they are even accepted by audiences. Sit-coms or comedy programs were a part of western television industry since quite some time (we don’t even remember for how long ‘Friends’ has been on air).

Recalling the time when such comedy shows made it to our television sets was at the time of the program called ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’ which aired on the then entertainment channel named as ‘Star One’. It was actually a competition for selecting India’s first best comedian which was judged by comedy kings Navjot Singh Siddhu and Shekhar Suman (who can also be called as one of the greatest comedian of all times, remember his appearance in ‘Movers and Shakers’). Though the title of best humorist was won by actor named Sunil Pal, during the course of the program, there was one man which became extremely popular due to his mannerisms of performing as a lady. Any guesses for this one? Well, you guessed it right. It was none other than a fine comedian named Navin Prabhakar. His acts and mannerisms as lady literally made people roll over floors. Navin Prabhakar won many hearts with his unique comedy skills and performances during the tenure and making him a very capable contender of being labeled as one of the best comedians at the show as well as otherwise.

It was this show that laid the red carpet for Indian stand-up comedy being taken as a major entertainer. A host of other entertainments on various channels have come up after that. Each program had a best comedian who made audience laugh with his/her sense of humor. And a lot of stand up actors have gained extreme popularity with their comic acts. One such is on air for quite some time now is ‘Comedy Circus’ aired on channel named ‘Sony’. This program today not only features stand-up artists, but various other popular television actors have also been a part of it showcasing their comic timings.

With so much talent in terms of comedy and acting around, it’s really hard for one to determine the comedian of today’s times as there are a number of actors / performers who are in the race to be called as country’s best comedian.
