When you are sewing it is important to choose the right fabric and this can sometimes be a daunting task. There are a wide range of different fabrics available but there are various attributes which will dictate whether or not the fabric is suitable for your project. The colour, style, and material dictate whether a bolt of fabric is suitable for the project that you have in mind. Before you make your choice in fabric you should know what you will be using the fabric for so that you can make the right choice. Some fabrics are best for making clothes while other fabrics should be used for quilting, or making decorative items.

When you are creating a decorative item for your home such as a wall hanging then you may find that what the sewing fabric is made of is not as important as it would be if you were planning on making an item of clothing. When you are making a piece of clothing it is important to take the time to find the best choice in fabric, it will be used against the skin and so it needs to be a fabric which is nice to touch and which isn't too heavy or thick. When you are creating a hanging for your wall, you will need to take into account the weight of the fabric, if you are only planning on using string to hang your item then you will need it to be quite lightweight. You should also take into account the colours of the fabric you choose, you will need the colours to match the colour scheme of the room you will be hanging it in, and if the room is warm with reds and oranges you don't want to be using a fabric which is blue or green. When you are creating any decorative item for your home it is important to match the colour scheme of the room it will be going in.

When you are creating decorative wall hangings one of the most important things is to factor in how it will fit into the space it is made for, you don't want to be spending days or even weeks creating a wall hanging only to find it doesn't sit right in the space you have chosen. One thing you can do is to hold swatches of cloth in the area it will be going in to ensure that it looks how you imagine it will, if you are worried about the size then you may have to stick some pieces of paper together and hold them up in the space so that you know whether or not it will be too big. If you don't have the fabric on hand to take a look at the colours in the space then you may want to print out an image to hold up but you must remember that your printer may not print out true depiction of the colours of the fabric.

If you are planning on making a quilt which will be used as a quilt then you will want to take care to buy quilting fabric which is 100% cotton, this is because it is soft, washable, and easy to quilt with, it is also a durable fabric. Cotton is also often used in clothing for the same reasons, using cotton will ensure you create something which is not only long lasting but which will still look good after multiple washes. Poly cotton is also often used in the creation of clothing, but can also be used for handbags, and many other projects which are touched and handled regularly.
