Advice For Artists

All the definitions of "artist" include one shared aspect, that this is a person who creates art. However there are other important things to be taken into account. A real artist is a person who listens to his inner voice, who creates the things that he must and is inspired to create even if no one understands it, like we can`t force ourselves not to breathe.

It must be a feeling inside you, a constant desire to create, and that is something you can`t learn in an art school. You can learn how to be simply a person who knows how to use the right tools and finish up with something that looks like something you could put on the wall, like any financier knows how to draw up a balance. In other words, the art school will give you the brushes, paints and canvas but not "The Starry Night" by Van Gogh. Of course the same point is applicable not only to paintings but to all fields of art (photography, music, sculpture, video and much more).

A piece of artwork is a mirror of your thoughts, experience and views. Do not try to be someone else in order to gain popularity. The best thing, and the best way to achieve the kind of reaction you can really value, is to be yourself.

And yes, art is still a business. When you realize the sense of Oscar Wilde`s words "When bankers get together for dinner, they discuss Art. When artists get together for dinner, they discuss money," you need to think about commercial side of art if it is to be your career. There are a number of things you can do to help with this - such as attending business classes, and seeking out and considering professional advice about things like exhibitions, prices, buyers, contracts and so on.

As you know we are living in the online world, the world of the internet and art is not an exception to the massive impact that the internet has had on our lives and businesses. For this reason it is valuable to have an online presence, so that people can find you on the internet and see your work and background and artistic approach there, even buy your work online if your portfolio and contact information are available there.

Some artists are not happy about the idea that this would take away from the time they want to spend on creating art, because there are only so many hours in the day and they cannot both create and arrange business affairs or internet sites at the same time. But there is time for both in the day and the week, month and year, if you understand that it is necessary and arrange your time to include both of them. It is worth it, and you may even find that you come to enjoy it!
