The wilderness can be a frightening, overwhelming place to be should you ever find yourself lost and on your own. Without the basic survival skills, the likelihood that anyone could survive in the wilderness is rather low. There's no need to be part of the statistics. Here are some of the most important wilderness survival tips that you should learn:

Take a hold of your emotions
This is the first thing you should remember. If you're scared, frustrated or angry, you will not be able to think straight and therein lies the danger. If you let emotions rule you, it's likely you'll be making bad judgments and decisions that could cost you later.

Take note of what you have with you
Check your clothing. Are you protected against the elements? What about your shoes? Can they withstand walking and jumping? What kind of items do you have in your pocket or purse that may be useful for survival in the wilderness? A nailcutter, for example, could be used to cut grass, stems or twigs while a compact mirror could be used for signaling. Take stock of everything you have in your person and the things you can use that's readily available in your vicinity.

Know your direction
Stop and try to determine where you are. How long have you been walking when you realized you were lost? How far away behind you was the last familiar landmark? Can you tell direction even without a compass? It's important that you know where you are so you can navigate yourself out of the wilderness.

Prioritize
Of course, your goal is to get out of the wilderness as fast as you can. But there are factors and circumstances that you have to consider carefully. If it's still light, you might want to determine which direction you should go and how far you can walk. If it's getting dark or the weather is getting colder, you might have to start a fire and build shelter or look for food and water. Your priority will also change if you have an injury.

Protect your body
More than anything, it is your body that is your best survival weapon if you get lost in the wilderness. Protect it from the elements - keep it warm, fed and hydrated. If you're too tired to walk, don't push your limit and rest. If your body is strong, you have a better chance of coming out of your ordeal alive and in good shape.

It is possible to survive the wilderness but only because you are prepared, know exactly what to do and are equipped for the job. If you're planning a trip or a hike to the wilderness in the future, make sure you're covered and bring a wilderness survival kit with you.

You don't go to the forest without a wilderness survival kit. And if you're just about to grab yourself one, choose only the top quality survival kit from Survival Gear.
