When working in high places, mobile access platforms are a piece of equipment no worker should be without. The use of such a platform not only keeps workers safe but also allows maximum work height to get the job finished properly. Additionally, using the proper mobile access platform will allow all construction workers to stay within compliance of safety rules and regulations, which are placed to limit the hazards of the job. Mobile access platforms all conform to these standards and use various types of all prevention systems built-in.

Accident Statistics

Statistically speaking, the risk of falling due to heights has been fairly steady over the years. About 50-60 people each year die because of falling and the overall rate at which people are injured from falling in the construction business each year is at an all time high of 50 per cent, which results in over 4000 more people every year becoming injured in some way because of falling from a height. While only 128 of these 4000 injuries are a result form working on a mobile access platform, that number is still too high.

Knowing these statistics is a must for anyone who works at heights in addition to understanding the various safety regulations in place to combat the injuries. Any employee who works at heights, which is typically classified at working above two meters above the ground, must avoid doing so whenever possible. Additionally, workers must use equipment such as mobile access platforms with fall prevention systems intact to help lower any risk present.

Accident Planning Prevention

Planning for any job in which the employees will work at considerable heights is necessary and supervision must be present at all times to account for any problems. Things to consider before starting any job in which employees will work at heights include:

• Keeping track of weather conditions which can severely limit the worker’s movement and visibility

• Knowledge of first aid and other emergency procedures

• Selecting the proper equipment for use when working at heights

• Using mobile access platforms that properly maintained and conform to safety standards when working at heights

• Proper supervision can be provided at all times

Historically, many things account for accidents that happen due to working at heights including lack of proper knowledge of the worksite and safety regulations attributed to working at heights. For example, failure to properly supervise the work and employees, failure to make use of properly maintained and inspected fall prevention systems or mobile access platform and not keeping up to date with regulations and safety rules all contribute to the hazards of working at heights.

All of these failures can be easily prevented with the proper supervision, training and knowledge, which is the main problem. Because many people do not want to take the time to learn the safety protocols of working at heights, they are essentially causing their own injuries. Using a mobile access platform not only reduces the risk of injury and death from a falling accident but also keeps workers within safety regulations as well.
