People are always asking the question: "What is the scariest film you have ever seen?" That question seems to always have a different answer depending on the person that you talk to. Each of us has our own opinions on what is our ultimate fear or what makes us stay up late at night under the covers. I am not going to have the ultimate answer to the question mentioned above, but I will try and give you some insight into the genre known as horror, and we will focus more on the classics rather than those slasher films that have been popular recently.

One of the first notable horror films of this past century was released in 1922 titled "Nosferatu A Symphony of Horror " directed by F. W. Murnau, tells the story of Dracula. At the time they were not given permission to use the actual name Dracula or any of the original character names from Bram Stoker's Dracula so hence that is what the name Nosferatu was given to the antagonist of the film. Since the films initial release there has been a large cult following. Now considered one of the great classics it is now public access which enables many who may have not been able to before to watch it and see it all in its entirety. For those that have watched the film, it may not compare to the horror films in recent time, but for its time of release and subject matter it is considered one of the greats and a grand foundation to start and build horror to what it is today.

Not just one, but many films that come to mind that are considered some of the greats are of course the monster horror classics from Universal Pictures. Each has brought a new sense of fear into the lives of its viewers. They have inspired generations, and have brought us new directors such as Wes Craven, John Carpenter, and others. They all regard the "Universal Monsters" as the classics that inspired them to create their own horror films. The artistic sets and direction is unmatched. Studios began to see after the release of these films the power that horror had on the public and how bringing out peoples fears into the open actually was entertaining more studios started to pop up with their own horror films. One of the most notable by those that have a love of horror, is Hammer Film Productions.

Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and others became famous from their work in Hammer Films. A British film studio that began in 1934, and had its reign of fear from the 1950's to the 1970's, brought horror films into a new level of suspense and mystery. Film after film was released where the sets and acting was stupendous if not perfection. "The Curse of Frankenstein" "The Invisible Man" "The Mummy" are just a small small part of the amazing collection of new horror films and remakes Hammer brought into the world. Here we find the makings of our own haunted house with the content and power Hammer brought to us. Now we are to the point of decorating and aging our horror chamber with the films of more modern times.

The 1980's and beyond brought a new collection of fear. "Nightmare on Elm St." "Friday the 13th" to "Scream" "I Know What You Did Last Summer" "The Blair Witch Project" and many others that our little house of horror into a home of horror. New technologies and special effects created scenes never before imagined by those directors that began building this genre. Who knows what newer films will bring us. What fears will keep us up late at night, and inspire even more generations of film makers and movie lovers alike. With time and patience we will see.
