It's no surprise that the new Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display took off with the #1 spot for the month. The budget-friendly HP Pavilion g6 rose again to second place as more people are looking for an affordable school laptop. Surprisingly, the best ultraportable business laptop currently on the market, the Lenovo ThinkPad X230, slipped from the top spot all the way down to #9 on the list for the month of July.
1. Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display (New to the Top 10) - The Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display features a 15.4-inch display with 5.1 million pixels; an all-flash architecture; quad-core Intel Core i7 processors; all in a design that's just 0.7-inch thick and 4.5 pounds. It's not just the most advanced notebook Apple has ever made, it's the most advanced Mac. At a price of $2,199 it's not cheap, but if you are willing to sacrifice the amazing display you can buy a similar MacBook Pro for just $1,799.
2. HP Pavilion g6 (Previously #4) - The Pavilion g6 is a budget-priced laptop that tries to balance great design, solid performance, and affordability. The Pavilion g6t series with 15.6-inch LED display features a range of available Intel Pentium and Core i series processors, Windows 7, multiple graphics options, and a 6-cell battery with more than four hours of battery life while browsing the web.
3. Lenovo ThinkPad T430 (Previously #7) - The Lenovo ThinkPad T430 is the replacement for the popular T420 business notebook. This 14-inch "business rugged" laptop features a lightweight carbon-fiber reinforced exterior with a metal roll cage supporting the inside of the chassis. Equipped with the latest 3rd generation Intel Core series processors, a wide selection of ports, and up to 15 hours of real-world battery life, the T430 is one of the best business notebooks of 2012.
4. Dell Inspiron 15R (Previously #3) - The Dell Inspiron 15R multimedia notebook includes a 6-cell battery that was tested to last for a maximum of 4 hours of power. Consumers can choose to purchase the optional 9-cell battery for longer mobile power. Hard drive can include up to 640GB of storage. Comes with a standard integrated graphics card or an optional ATi Radeon graphics card. Color choices include black, blue, pink or red.
5. Lenovo G570 (Previously #5) - The G570 is part of the budget-priced/general use G-Series line by Lenovo. Running on Windows 7 Home Premium on a 15.6-inch display (1366x768), the G570 has an Intel Core i5-2410M dual-core processor and up to 8GB of RAM. Choose from a 500GB capacity hard drive at 5400rpm or a 750GB capacity hard drive at 5400rpm. The integrated graphics included with the system is an Intel HD 3000.
6. ASUS G75VW (Previously #2) - The ASUS G75VW excels in nearly every area as have previous-generation ASUS G-series gaming notebooks. This gaming notebook features a new backlit keyboard and the latest technology including an Intel Core i7-3610QM processor and 2GB Nvidia GTX 660M graphics card. The 17.3-inch LED-backlit screen features 1920x1080 resolution for a full 1080p experience when watching Blu-ray movies. Build quality is good; it gets a respectable three hours of laptop battery life and overall performance is outstanding.
7. Samsung Series 9 (Previously #6) - The Samsung Series 9 NP900X3B is Samsung's top of the range offering in the 13-inch ultrabook category. The Series 9 includes an Intel i5-2467M processor (1.6GHz with TurboBoost to 2.3GHz, 3MB cache), 13.3 inch anti-glare 1600 x 900 with LED backlighting, 4GB DDR3 RAM, a 128GB SATA 3 SSD, and a weight of just over 2.5 pounds.
8. Lenovo ThinkPad T430s (New to the Top 10) - The Lenovo ThinkPad T430s is a thinner and lighter version of the 14-inch ThinkPad T430 business notebook. Released in June of 2012, the biggest changes between the T430s and its predecessor, the T420s, are that the T430s now comes with Intel's third-generation Ivy Bridge processors and Lenovo's new backlit chiclet or island style "Precision" keyboard. An updated discrete graphics option is available for i5 models as well - the NVIDIA NVS 5200M with Optimus Technology.
9. Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (Previously #1) - Lenovo's latest and greatest ultraportable business notebook, the 12.5-inch ThinkPad X230, promises to strike the perfect balance between serious performance and mobility. With the latest Intel Ivy Bridge processors and more than 8 hours of battery life with a standard battery this "business rugged" notebook is designed with road warriors in mind. Lenovo claims that the X230 can deliver up to 24 hours of battery life with both the optional 9-cell laptop batteries and the slice battery that connects to the bottom of the notebook.
10. HP ENVY Sleekbook 6z (New to the Top 10) - The HP ENVY Sleekbook 6z (also called the Sleekbook 6z-1000) is one thin and light notebook; it's about two-thirds the height and weight of a normal 15.6-inch notebook at just 0.78 inches and 4.75 lbs. It is available with either a dual-core AMD A6 processor or quad-core AMD A10 processor for between $600 and $700 at launch. A thicker and heavier standard 15.6-inch notebook might offer better performance and better storage options but the Sleekbook 6z is one of the thinnest and lightest 15-inch notebooks on the market in this price range.
