What are my career options in fashion design?
The fashion industry is growing and the career options in fashion design have increased tremendously over the past few years. Some students choose to start their own line of clothing, some others may choose to work with senior designers and get more experience, while the others would dive into the retail or exports market.
As a part of the retail industry, you could design collections, manage brands, be a buyer or manage stores. The experience of working on collections helps you learn working in a team, creating a brand image and introducing new styles in the market.
As a merchandiser you would need to keep yourself up to date with the trends and ensure that you offer innovative solutions for the brand while keeping in mind the current tastes and styles.

As a store manager you would be required to use your management as well as fashion skills to ensure that customer has a fulfilling shopping experience.
If you like to showcase collections to allure customers, you could train to be a visual merchandiser. As a visual merchandiser you would need to decide the look and the feel of the display windows. You would need to dress up displays with props and mannequins according to specific themes as well as decide the way the collection is displayed inside the store.

Exports can be lucrative for those who would like to be production managers and be responsible for getting textiles and clothing made at the manufacturing level. They work with suppliers and retailers to make sure quality in production is maintained and orders are completed on time. This field has the potential to be exciting and challenging. Understanding the client’s requirements, material/garment production and meeting deadlines is stressful and yet fulfilling if you are equipped with the right set of skills and attitude.

Students with an exceptional sense of fashion designing, style and an ability to experiment may choose the Haute Couture. Haute Couture is a custom designed piece of art that is specially designed for a person, theme or occasion. It is usually made from high-quality, expensive fabric and sewn with extreme attention to detail and finished by the most experienced and capable seamstresses, often using time-consuming, hand-executed techniques.

Fashion and Media have always been closely connected. While stylists have always been in the limelight, media has now opportunities for connoisseurs and fashion professionals to write and express themselves through newspaper articles, columns and blogs. The digital era has made shopping easy and accessible for people but it is the reviews and fashion consultants and reviewers who influence the customers.
