To those who are still unfamiliar VOIP is an acronym for Voice over Internet Protocol, or simply phone service using the Internet. VoIP users can save a lot of money, apart from enjoying a host of other benefits.

Whereas the traditional phone system transmits voice over wires and fibers, VoIP transmits voice in digital form. The process is not difficult to understand. In the traditional phone system, once you dial a number, the connection between the two ends is established by means of a wire. The farther away the person you called, the longer the wire, the higher the cost.

In contrast, VoIP sends voice over an IP based network. The data packets are fragmented into pieces and transmitted to the receiver, where the data packets are reassembled back in order. Since the data connection is through the Internet, there is one fixed cost for all phone calls regardless of distances. There are three different ways to avail the VOIP facility:

  • VoIP facility can be had through an Analog Telephone Adaptor (ATA). This adaptor would hook up to your phone, which in turn, is hooked up to your computer and Internet. The adaptor will enable turning the analog signal into a digital signal.

  • VoIP facility can be had through an IP phone. The IP phone resembles a regular phone except that it has an Ethernet cable connector instead of a phone jack. The Ethernet cable can be plugged right into a router, eliminating the need for a computer.

  • One more way to use VoIP is computer to computer. This will eliminate the need for a VoIP service provider and the software required can be freely downloaded from the Internet. Lot of money can be saved as the only cost payable is the monthly Internet fee.

It may be noted that unlike the traditional landline phone, VoIP does not use PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). Instead, VoIP uses packet switching, which means the two communicating parties are connected only when a packet is being transmitted. This allows the packets to travel the most efficient path without any dedicated line.

Apart from considerable cost savings, VoIP has a host of features. It also allows portability as you can carry your phone and use it wherever there is a broadband Internet connection. VOIP is revolutionizing the world of telecommunications and most business enterprises are abandoning their traditional system in favor of VoIP. VoIP is becoming increasingly popular and it is being widely acclaimed as the technology of the future.
