Laser hair removal has turned the tables on messy, painful, and tedious waxing, shaving, and plucking. Permanent hair removal means no longer having to deal with embarrassing facial hair and never having to shave or go through painful waxing procedures again. Imagine the time saved once waxing, shaving and plucking are no longer a necessary part of your beauty routine.

This technology uses a beam of light, which goes through the skin to the hair follicle, where it destroys the hair follicle. The skin around the area is not affected. A cooling device is used to protect skin during the treatment, providing comfort for the patient. Several sessions are usually required to remove all unwanted hair. Treatments last as little as several minutes for small areas to several hours for larger areas.

Over time the price of laser hair removal pays for itself. Though the initial cost can be several hundred dollars, the price of waxing, creams and razors add up over a lifetime. Another thing to consider is the never-ending commitment. Shaving, waxing and tweezing takes up a lot of time and can become a tedious process. Once the laser hair removal treatments are done for an area, they will not have to be treated again.

How effective laser hair removal is depends on a variety of factors including hair type, skin type and color. Since each person has unique characteristics, a specific plan will be implemented for the hair color and skin-type of each patient. Based on the individual factors, the best treatment option will be chosen for the desired results.

Several sessions are required for complete hair removal. How many sessions needed depends on the skin and hair type of the individual. The treatments are most effective when hair is actively growing, so treatments should continue until the hair is no longer growing.

Before beginning sessions it is best to stay out of the sun as much as possible for two to four weeks. Sun block should be applied if outdoors for any length of time. Tweezing, waxing and shaving should be avoided during this time as well to ensure the process is completed correctly. Within 24 hours, the areas to be treated should be shaved. This allows the laser to work more efficiently and with less discomfort.

Once the treatment is over, a cool compress can be applied to the treated area. When in the sun, be sure to apply a sun block with SPF 30 or higher. The treated areas should not be scrubbed with harsh cleaning products for a few days following treatment. Side effects are minimal but can include swelling, redness and blistering.

Laser hair removal is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not usually covered under most medical insurance policies. Be sure to check with your insurance provider to be sure. Whether it is covered or not, you can be sure that your life will be a whole lot simpler when your skin is smooth and hair free.
