Released in November 2009, the Vodafone 540 offers a range of useful features encased in a simple and affordable handset. Simplicity is certainly the name of the game with the Vodafone 540, and whilst this is definitely no Smartphone, it does provide an affordable alternative to those seeking a handset which performs basic functions very well.

The 540 measures 109x47x11.3mm and weighs in at just 90g, so is a slim line and lightweight handset. The 2 inch TFT screen is capable of displaying up to 65,000 colours ensuring bright and sharp display.

Users are alerted to incoming calls and messages by vibration and ringing and even has the option to utilize MP3 music files as ringtones allowing customisation of the phone. A speakerphone is also included which allows hands free communication, certainly a very useful feature.

Internal memory in the Vodafone 540 is 8 MB; however this can be significantly increased up to 4 GB of storage for media files, contact info and other files. The phonebook can store up to 500 entries and also has photo call, where a photograph of each contact is assigned, and then appears on the screen when the contact is calling. Up to 20 calls can be stored in each of the following categories: dialled, received and missed. The primary means of connection is via GPRS, Class 10 of which is installed on the 540.

The Vodafone 540 is equipped with a digital camera boasting 2 mega pixels. This operates at a pixel resolution of 1600x1200 pixels. On top of this, it can also shoot video footage as an alternative to taking still photographs.

Messaging options include SMS, MMS and even Email. Users can browse the web using WAP 2.0/xHTML. A media player is included which can play music files in MP3 and AAC formats. It can also play video files in MP4 and H.264 formats. Other entertainment options include a built in FM Radio and a range of games.

Several other features are included, such as a handy organizer, voice memo recorder and T9 predictive text input.

Whilst this may not be the most attractive handset n the world, it is refreshing to see a newly released mobile phone which isn't necessarily aimed at the style conscious, rather those who are seeking an affordable handset which is very functional and meets the daily demands of its users.
