You need not purchase an expensive work of art for the right framing selections can easily transform an inexpensive print or poster into this. In terms of mat colors you want one that serves to enhance your art. Having a double or triple mat will help when you want it to pick up a color from the image. Go for colorful bottom mats and neutral top mats. When it comes to double and triple mats these add dimension to any framing.

Considering the mat width you should take note of the size of the piece and also the width of the frame. Refrain from using one width when it comes to your mat and frame. Ending up detracting from the image is the formed striped appearance. When it comes to the bottom mat of a double mat it should extend about a half an inch. Mats usually look best when every side is the same width.

There may be some floating prints and images with deckled or distinctive edges. For a floating image it is hinged to the front of your mat board. The image gets a boarder when a mat board is used. There is no problem when it comes to a print with deckled edges not being centered on a mat because it is uneven. You can cut a mat and put the pieces on the edge of the print if there is nothing distinctive about the edges.

There are times when framing photographs becomes a challenge. Ornate wood frames in silver, gold and a variety of natural finishes may work with wedding photos, portraits, or other formal photographic images, old and new, but art photographs, especially black and white, work best with simple wood or metal frames in black or silver or with light natural wood frames. When gold finished or cherry wood frames are used on black and white photographs there is competition.

For antique photographs complex framing is a good idea. Working best for old black and white photos are silver frames. For sepia prints it is a good idea to go for antiqued gold finished frames and wooden ones in cherry, mahogany, and ebony walnut. Should you have traditional paintings including portraits and landscapes go for fabric liners and ornate mouldings. What works well for contemporary paintings are simple frames without liners.

There are other uses for framing besides for posters, photographs, paintings, or prints. You can display christening dresses, political buttons, theater tickets, fabrics, and old letters and postcards in your home or at the office after having them framed. Associated with gallery style framing is the minimalist look. Natural finishes for wooden frames or ones in matte black are used here.

These frames come with straight edges and absolutely no ornamentation. When it comes to gallery style framing, these use 8 ply mats in different shades of white. Considering a small image measuring around 3 by 5 inches, mats measuring 5 inches can be placed on all sides. Not only does the heavy mat make the piece look important but the viewer's eye is drawn into the image as well.

For antique furnishings and reproductions ornate wood frames never lose their popularity. The magnificent mood in the 1980s is represented by high sheen silver and gold frames while the reserved spirit of the 1990s comes through with antiqued silver and gold frames. Considering the metal frames from ten years ago the industrial metal frames are much different. In the newer ones there are brushed finishes with cross hatching and cleaner lines in their wider design. Taking into consideration several framing options, these and earlier metal frames are economical.

For art photography the famous photographers have been able to revitalize it but made popular by restoration services is the restoration and framing of your family's own antique photographs. When it comes to antique posters they are expensive to frame considering their size but they are less expensive when compared to many original artworks and their value continues to increase with time. Aside from people with lots of wall space these are also great for loft dwellers.
